“pray tell ,” said the prce, “who is that prcess of who you have been talkg! and where lies the garden of paradise?”

Sotis it was so narrow that they had to creep on their hands and knees, while at other tis it was lofty and wide, like the free air. It had the appearance of a chapel for the dead, with petrified ans and silent pipes.

It was the tree of knowledge of good and evil, fro which Ada and Eve had pcked aen the forbidden fruit, and fro each leaf trickled a bright red dewdrop, as if the tree were weepg tears of blood for their s.

“现在我们去坐船吧。” 仙女说：“在凉爽的水面上航行会让我们神清气爽。”

“Letnow take the boat,” said the fairy: “a sail on the ol waters will refresh .

“Exae your ow,” said the prcess, “and if you do not feel sure of its strength, return with the East d whht you. he is about to fly back, and will not return here for a hundred years. the ti will not see to you ore than a hundred hours, yet even that is a long ti for teptation aance. Every eveng, when I leave you, I shall be obliged to say, ‘e with ,’ and to be to you with y hand. but you t not listen, nor ove fro your pce to follow ; for with every step you will fd your power to resist weaker. If once you attepted to follow , you would soon fd yourselfthe hall, where grows the tree of knowledge, for I sleep beh its perfud branches. If you stooped over , I should be forced to sile. If you then kissed y lips, the garden of paradise would sk to the earth, and to you it would be lost. A keen d fro the desert would howl around you; ld ra fall on your head, and sorrow and woe be your future lot.”

“我会留下。” 王子说。

“I will rea,” said the prce.

“So the East d kissed hi on the forehead, and said, “be fir; then shall we et aga when a hundred years have passed. Farewell, farewell.” then the East d spread his broad pions, which shone like the lightngharvest, or as the northern lightsa ld ter.

After this the fairy led hi te hall, filled with transparent lilies. the yellow staa of each flower ford a ty golden harp, fro which ca forth stras of ic like the iones of fte and lyre. beautiful aidens, slender and gracefulfor, and robedtransparent gauze, floated through the dance, and sang of the happy lifethe garden of paradise, where death never entered, and where all would bloo foreveriortal youth. As the su down, the whole heavens beca crison and gold, and tihe lilies with the hue of roses. then the beautiful aidens offered to the prce sparklg e; and when he had drank, he felt happess greater than he had ever known before. presently the background of the hall opened and the tree of knowledge appeared, surrounded by a halo of glory that alost blded hi. Voices, soft and lovely as his other’s soundedhis ears, as if she were sgg to hi, “y child, y beloved child.”

She siled as he bent over her, and he saw tears treblg out of her beautiful eyeshes. “do you weep for ?” he whispered. “oh weep not, thou loveliest of won.
